چکیده

Understanding nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from agricultural soils in semi-arid regions is required to better understand global terrestrial N2O losses. Nitrous oxide fluxes were measured from three rain-fed, cropped soils in a semi-arid region of south-western Australia on a sub-daily basis from 1995 to 2014 using automated chambers. Western Australia’s grain-belt includes 7 million hectares of arable land, with cropping confined to winter and soils fallow at other times. Nitrogen fertilizer (up to 100 kg N ha yr) was applied at planting and during the growing season depending on crop requirements. In situ N2O measurements were consistently small from all sites (0.04–0.27 kg N ha yr), representing 0.01 to 0.12% of applied N fertilizer. Increasing soil organic matter (OM) increased soil N2O fluxes, but losses represented <0.12% of the N fertilizer applied. While including grain legumes in cropping rotations also did not enhance soil N2O fluxes in the growing season or post-harvest. Developing strategies for mitigating N2O fluxes from cropping soils in our region is challenging as most losses occur post-harvest, when there is no active plant growth, and in response to summer rainfall. Increasing the efficiency of the nitrification process by increasing soil pH (via liming) decreased N2O fluxes from sandy, acidic soils following summer rainfall, and is a potential strategy for mitigating N2O fluxes from nitrification. Accurately accounting for N2O fluxes in our region has refined Australia’s national greenhouse gas inventory and demonstrated annual fluxes can be low from cropped soils in semi-arid regions.

Potassium reserves in soils with arid and semi-arid climate in southern Iran: a perspective based on potassium fixation

ABSTRACT- The present research was conducted to study K forms and fixation in soils of southern Iran (Hormozgan Province) with aridic and aridic-ustic regimes and to address the relations between soil mineralogy and potassium forms. Thirteen surface soil samples (0-25 cm) were collected from different regions and analyzed in laboratory. Illite and feldspar and mica are the major clay and soil m...

Nitrous oxide flux from soil amino acid mineralization

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas produced during microbial transformation of soil N that has been implicated in global climate warming. Nitrous oxide efflux from N fertilized soils has been modeled using NO3 K content with a limited success, but predicting N2O production in non-fertilized soils has proven to be much more complex. The present study investigates the contribution of soil am...

Breaking continuous potato cropping with legumes improves soil microbial communities, enzyme activities and tuber yield

This study was conducted to explore the changes in soil microbial populations, enzyme activity, and tuber yield under the rotation sequences of Potato-Common vetch (P-C), Potato-Black medic (P-B) and Potato-Longdong alfalfa (P-L) in a semi-arid area of China. The study also determined the effects of continuous potato cropping (without legumes) on the above mentioned soil properties and yield. T...

Mitigation of nitrous oxide emissions with nitrification inhibitors in temperate vegetable cropping in southern Australia

Intensive vegetable production in southern Australia is characterised by high inputs of nitrogen (N) fertiliser, water, and occasionally animal manures, which creates the potential for high nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Three field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of the nitrification inhibitors 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP), 3-methyl pyrazole plus 1H-1,2,4 triazo...

Net global warming potential and greenhouse gas intensity in irrigated cropping systems in northeastern Colorado.

The impact of management on global warming potential (GWP), crop production, and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) in irrigated agriculture is not well documented. A no-till (NT) cropping systems study initiated in 1999 to evaluate soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration potential in irrigated agriculture was used in this study to make trace gas flux measurements for 3 yr to facilitate a complete...
